James “Jim” Edwin Downing

James “Jim” Edwin Downing passed peacefully on February 25, 2025, surrounded by his loving family and the compassionate staff of LaMoine Assisted Living in Macomb. Born May 24, 1942, in Peoria to William Chester “Chet” Downing and Georgia (Bartlett) Downing, Jim built a life marked by dedication to his craft and devotion to his family. A master of his trade, Jim proudly served with the Local 60 Boilermakers and contributed his expertise to numerous construction companies throughout his career. He culminated his professional journey as a construction manager and project superintendent at Alstom Power before retiring in 2012. Jim’s passion for the outdoors defined his leisure time. An avid sportsman, he found joy in fishing and hunting, creating treasured memories while sharing these passions with his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. He leaves behind his loving wife, Carol Downing; their children Tamrin Downing, Dawn Henricks, Shane Ford, Jennifer Davis, Merri (Christy) Downing, Marianne Ponsler, and James W. Downing; along with numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren who will carry his legacy forward. Jim was preceded in death by his parents and grandson Justin Smith. The funeral service will be held Saturday, March 1st at 2:00 pm at Henry Lange Memorial Home, 203 N. Illinois St., Lewistown, Illinois. Visitation will be held one hour prior to services and burial will be in Oak Hill Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the Lewistown Rescue Squad.
