George B. Hopps
George B. Hopps, 85, of Snicarte passed away Sunday March 10, 2024, at the Havana Health Care Center with family by his side. He was born December 6, 1938, in White City to Jarveaux and Edith (Smith Perkins) Hopps. He is preceded in death by his parents, wife Patricia (Stubbs) Hopps, two brothers; Jim Perkins and Jay Hopps, four sisters; Mildred Perkins, Doris Graham, Jean Lowe, and Gloria McMullen- Johnson and 1 great grandchild. He is survived by his brother Michael (Faye) Hopps of Chandlerville, four sons; Jeff (Tina) Hopps of Snicarte, Eric (Sierra) Hopps of Tecumseh, NE, Mark Hopps of Beardstown, Ryan (Valerie) Hopps of Bath and four daughters; Lisa Hopps of Petersburg, Angie (Dave) Hallmark of Ipava, Monica (Bryan) Ladd of Havana and Carrolyn (Tim) Royer of Astoria as well as twenty-two grandchildren; and twenty-three great-grandchildren. His lineage will indeed be lasting. George spent many years as a carpenter before being employed by the Illinois Department of Transportation as a highway maintenance worker where he retired after 20 years of service in 1998. He was passionate about the outdoors and enjoyed hunting, trapping, commercial fishing and for a period commercial mussel shell diving. He spent countless hours down at the 40 and later the 20, caring for his land and providing a home to wildlife, but as was typical of his character, left just enough room to experiment with various crop and produce plantings. He was certainly a man of varied interests and especially enjoyed the buying and selling of antiques and collectibles and was a regular at area auction and sales events. This brief acknowledgement of Georges life, as to anyone’s life, seems unjust in its brevity. The written word is a poor substitute for a lifetime of knowledge, relationships, and memories. Needless to say, he is loved and will be deeply missed. “For then the dust will return to the earth, and the spirit will return to God who gave it.” Ecclesiastes 12:7 Services will be held at Hopewell Baptist Church, Snicarte on Friday March 15. Visitation will take place from 10:00-11:00 a.m., followed by funeral services at 11:00 a.m. Burial to follow at Fairview United Methodist Church Cemetery, rural Chandlerville. Memorial donations may be made in George’s name to Hopewell Baptist Church. Online condolences can be left for his family at www.hurleyfh.com. Hurley Funeral Home in Havana is in charge of arrangements.
