Marilyn Kay Long Cusick
Marilyn Kay Long Cusick, 77, formerly of Havana, passed away peacefully on Friday, October 13, 2023, surrounded by her family. She was born in Canton, on October 11, 1946, the daughter of the late Edward “Edo” Dale Long and Janette Hackman Long. She was a retired school librarian with Sparta High School in Sparta. Marilyn was a member of the Carrollton Women’s Club and St. Margaret’s Episcopal Church, where she was an active member of the Episcopal Church Women (ECW), Sunday School teacher and served as Altar Guild Chair. Survivors include her husband, Joseph Cusick; daughter, Kelly Cusick; son, Corey (Ketty) Cusick; grandchildren, Kempton “Wade” Ballard and Calvin Cusick; brothers, Edward “Ebby” Long, Jeff Long, Douglas Long and P.J. Long; sister, Martha Baxter; and numerous nieces and nephews. Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her brother, Gregg Long; and sister, Sharon Long. Marilyn grew up in Havana, the oldest of eight children. She was a member of St. Barnabas Episcopal Church and a very active member of the Havana High School Class of 1964. Following graduation, Marilyn attended Shimer College from 1964-68, earning a degree in the areas of Humanities and Literature. In the summer of 1970, Marilyn joined a friend for a trip to the West Coast, where she ultimately met the love of her life, Joseph. The couple married in August of 1973 in Havana, and recently celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on August 4, 2023. Marilyn worked in the banking industry until 1984 when she started her career in the education field, retiring as the librarian of Sparta High School in May of 2010. Marilyn and Joseph moved to Carrollton, Georgia, in 2017 to be closer to their grandchildren, something Marilyn cherished deeply upon spending as much precious time as possible with her beloved Wade and Calvin during her golden years. No one treasured family like Marilyn did, and she will forever be remembered for her unconditional love by her family and church family. A memorial mass will be held at St. Margaret’s Episcopal Church on Friday, October 20, at 11 a.m. with Father Jeff Jackson officiating. A reception will follow the service. A family inurnment will take place on Saturday, November 11 in Laurel Hill Cemetery in Havana.
