Sanford G. “Sandy” Showalter

Sanford G. “Sandy” Showalter, 77, of Easton, passed away at his home at 6:24 p.m., on Friday, May 26, 2023. He was born October 18, 1945, near Kilbourne, to Charles and Edna (Crane) Showalter, and was later raised by Dru and Oren Fairow. Mr. Showalter is survived by two children: Ben (Lindsay) Showalter and Kassie (Mike) Johnson, both of Havana; seven grandchildren: Alex, Lauren, Laikyn and Logan Showalter, and Grace, Libbie and Averie Johnson. He was looking forward to becoming a great-grandfather this Fall. He was preceded in death by his parents, and nine siblings: Twila Shoemaker, Rose John, Dru Fairow, Charles “Chubb” Showalter, Shirley Montgomery, Alice Sinclair, Betty Thomas, Sharon Copp, and Kenny Showalter. Mr. Showalter was a member of 1st Baptist Church in Havana, where he had served as Deacon and Trustee. He was a member of the Havana Optimist Club. He enjoyed making and sampling wine, woodworking, tinkering with mowers, gardening and canning. He rarely missed one of his grandchildren’s events, following them to school and sporting events, as well as 4-H activities. Many days he spent at the Havana Riverfront Park watching the river and drinking coffee with his friends. He was known for his storytelling abilities and jokes. He worked for many years as a mechanic for Stelter-Hofreiter in Havana. Visitation will be held at Hurley Funeral Home, on Tuesday, May 30 from 5:00 until 7:00 p.m. Funeral services will be held at 1st Baptist Church, in Havana, at 11:00 a.m., on Wednesday, May 31. Rev. Daniel Swihart will officiate. Burial will follow the services at New Lebanon Cemetery, near Kilbourne. Memorial contributions may be made to his church or HHS Girls Softball.
