Helen Mardell Vanderveen
Helen Mardell Vanderveen, 86, of Havana passed away at 6:58 a.m. on Wednesday, February 22 at the Lodge in Manito. She was born on February 22, 1937 in Peoria to Levurn and Grace (Gilbert) Bohm. She married Wayne Vanderveen on February 23, 1958 at St. John’s Lutheran Church. He preceded her in death on December 20, 2018. Mrs. Vanderveen is survived by her daughter Robin (Paul) Labonte of Ellijay, Georgia, two grandchildren, Ryan and Michael Sjoerdsman, one great-granddaughter, and several half-siblings. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, son, Brantz Vanderveen, sisters, Velma O’Brien and Sylvia Meinders, and brother, Merritt Shirley. Mrs. Vanderveen was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church where she taught Sunday school for many years. She enjoyed St. Louis Cardinals baseball. A visitation will be held on Friday, March 3 from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Hurley Funeral Home in Havana. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, March 4 at 11:00 a.m. at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Bath. Rev. Brian Lesemann will officiate. Burial will follow the service at Laurel Hill Cemetery in Havana. Memorial donations may be made in Mrs. Vanderveen’s name to Mason District Hospital or St. John’s Lutheran Church.
