Richard “Dick” Dean Vanderveen

Richard “Dick” Dean Vanderveen, 84, of Kilbourne, passed away with his family and pastor at his side at 5:30 p.m. on Sunday, March 22, 2026 at St. John’s Hospital in Springfield. He was born on March 4, 1942 in Havana to Robert and Bernice (Huber) Vanderveen. He married Janice Schaeffer on November 7, 1964 at St. John’s Lutheran Church, and she survives. Dick is survived by his wife, Janice; brother, Glen (Rebecca) Vanderveen of Havana; and brother-in-law, Randy Bell of Manito. He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Arlis Bell; nephew, Christopher Bell; and several other aunts, uncles, nieces, and nephews. Dick was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church in Bath and served for 6 years in the Army Reserves. Farming was Dick’s whole life starting early as a “pup”. His young adult life brought basketball as a passion along with farming. When his lifetime decision for farming was made, his brother Glen joined him and Dick always said, “I couldn’t have had a better partner”. At harvest time it was a family affair. Life was good. Cremation rites have been accorded and a memorial service will be held at noon on Thursday, March 26 at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Bath, with a visitation two hours prior to the service from 10:00 a.m. until noon. Rev. Brian Lesemann will officiate. Memorial donations may be made in Dick’s name to St. John’s Lutheran Church or Kilbourne Fire Department.
