    Adults and their tots will have fun exploring, discovering, and learning on the first Thursday of the month in the Museum’s Discovery Center. Spend quality time with your tot, while each of you makes new friends. A different topic and craft will be featured each month. 
    On October 4, Illinois Department of Natural Resources Van Grissom will present A Turtle’s Pace, a program that focuses on aquatic conservation, habitat, and foodwebs.  Special guests include various native live turtles.  Fun crafts to take home!
    Registration is not required and admission is free. Participants will enjoy light refreshments. The program begins promptly at 9:30 a.m. with the program portion lasting approximately thirty minutes followed by crafts, snacks, and time to explore the Museum. Older siblings are welcome to participate in the program.
    This program series is sponsored by the City of Lewistown, Canton Chamber of Commerce, Havana National Bank, Lewistown VFW Post 5001 Auxiliary, Rusty Melhouse of Edward Jones, and Chris Bennett of Dunfermline.

  • Christ Lutheran Church to host Pulled Pork Dinner

    Christ Lutheran Church located at 114 E Walnut St. in Mason City will be hosting their annual Pulled Pork Dinner on Friday October 12 from 5 – 7 p.m. The pulled pork meal consists of a pulled pork sandwich, baked beans, cole slaw, potato chips and a home-made dessert. A hot dog meal will also be available. Meals may be dine-in or drive-through. If driving through for pick up, please enter from Main Street. If dining in, please park along Walnut Street.   • Annual Spook Trail set Oct. 16 at Lakeland Park

    Canton Park District and the Canton High School Thespian Club will host the 33rd annual Spook Trail on Tuesday, October 16 from 6 to 8:30 p.m. at the Nagel Playground in Lakeland Park. Rain date, if necessary, is Wednesday, October 17.

    This year’s theme will provide some new frights but with the same fun as always. There is a $1 donation per person with proceeds donated to the Thespian Club.

    All groups are guided by haunted hosts. Not-so-scary monsters for children up to age 8 will be on hand from 6 to 7 p.m. Spooks for older kids will be from 7 to 8:30 p.m.

  • Kid’s Day: Birds of a Feather

    Storyteller, Educator, and Puppeteer Marilyn Price will present Birds of a Feather, a trio of stories using puppets and props and stories from the Native American tradition including, The Big Rain, The Raven and a gentle story of the wisdom of the sun and the moon! Price creates all of her puppet characters using everyday objects so that her audience can create their own and tell stories to make the learning their own.  Kids may enjoy crafts to take home.

    Kid’s Day programs are for kids ages 5+ years old with an adult.  Admission is free.  The program will begin promptly at 1:00 p.m. in the Museum’s auditorium.  Seating is limited and available on a first come, first served basis.  Auditorium doors open at 12:00 p.m.

    For more than 20 years, people have gathered at Dickson Mounds on the third Saturday of every month for an evening of musical entertainment. Hosted by Chris Vallillo, an accomplished musician and performer in his own right, the series features Roots/Folk music and other genres offered by a talented variety of performers.

    Patty Stevenson & Craig Siemsen will perform on October 20th.

    Described as genuinely talented with classic folk voices, Patty Stevenson and Craig Siemsen are known for their gorgeous harmonies, impeccable musicianship, playful stage humor, and jewel-like original songs. Patty says about performing, “I try for magic – nothing less! For the place that opens hearts and will move an audience to tears or smiles.”

    Families and children can enjoy safe trick-or-treating throughout the downtown area during Munchkin Masquerade, a tradition that has evolved from “Merchant’s Night” into spooky decorations throughout Jones Park. Free candy for the children, music, entertainment, and an all-around fantastic celebration! Merchants from the immediate downtown area will be participating. Admission to this event is free and open to the public.
