Michael David Cahill

Michael David Cahill passed away peacefully at the Danville VA Hospital on Wednesday, August 23, 2023 at 1:25 a.m. He died of acute dementia with complications. He was born on July 9, 1947 to Donald and Edith (Tunis) Cahill Meier in Chicago. Mike is survived by his wife, Rose Ann (Cain) Cahill, his half-sister, Pam Meier, step-sister, Susan Riley, step-brother, Bob Meier, and favorite cousins, Margaret Bareika, Danny Schulz, and Bert Blakeway. He was preceded in death by his parents and cousin, Nancy Mendez. Mike grew up in Zion and later attended Oak Park High School in Chicago. He attended Illinois State University with a major in English and History. While attending college he met and married Rose Ann (Rosie) Cain on August 26, 1967 at the First Christian Church in Henry. They were married 55 years. His college education was interrupted when he was drafted into the U.S. Army where he served 13 months in Vietnam. During his service he was a paratrooper and received many awards, including the Bronze Star. After his completion of military duty, Mike returned to ISU where he earned a teaching degree. Mike was a much-respected teacher at Havana High School and Havana Junior High, where he retired in 2005. Mike’s favorite hobbies were hunting, fishing, golf, and reading books. He loved all of his puppy dogs and one cat. He was a proud life member of the VFW Post #6408 where he served as quartermaster and commander for several years. He was also a member of the American Legion in Henry. Mike was much loved by his friends, cousins, wife’s family members, and Rosie. He will be missed so much. Cremation rites have been accorded and a memorial service will be held on Saturday, September 2 at 11:00 a.m. at Hurley Funeral Home in Havana, with a visitation one hour prior to the service from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. Military rites will be conducted at noon at VFW Post #6408 in Havana, with a luncheon to follow. Memorial contributions may be made in Mike’s name to the Humane Society of the United States or VFW Post #6408. Online condolences can be left for his family at www.hurleyfh.com.
