Roy Lee Cowin

Roy Lee Cowin, 82, of Kilbourne passed away at 3:43 a.m. on Sunday, March 5 at Memorial Hospital in Springfield. He was born on June 11, 1940 to Charles and Evelyn Whitehead Cowin. He married Sharon Cowin on June 14, 1959 in Havana and she preceded him in death on January 9, 2023. Roy is survived by his children Christy (David) Fletcher of Mt. Vernon, Kentucky and Tony (Jodi Morgan) Cowin of Kilbourne; grandchildren, Sarah (Aaron) Lipe, Benjamin (Morgan) Fletcher, Logan (Morgan) Cowin, Luke (Abby) Cowin, and Nicole (Tanner) Force; four great-grandchildren: Arabella Fletcher, Autumn Fletcher, Stetson Cowin, and McKenzie Force; sister, Lorena Gilmore of Petersburg; brother-in-law, Butch (Laura) Shick of Michigan, and many extended family members. Roy graduated from Kilbourne High School in 1958 and worked at Caterpillar in Peoria for 33 years. After retiring from Caterpillar, Roy worked in the family business, Cowin Service, until 2018. He served since 1965 with the Kilbourne Volunteer Fire Department, including 12 years as Chief and the last 20+ years as Trustee. Roy was a part of the fabric of Kilbourne, helping with every festival and celebration, sharing produce from his large garden, and was always willing to help where needed. Most recently, Roy enjoyed taking his restored Cushman firetruck to every parade for miles around. More than anything, Roy loved his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. He was dearly loved by his family and close friends and will be greatly missed. A graveside service will be held on Saturday, March 11at 11:00 a.m. at Kilbourne Cemetery. Rev. Abraham Mogerman will officiate. After the service, please join the family at the Kilbourne Firehouse for lunch and to visit with family and friends.
