Mr. Harold “Porky” Russell Rhoades

Mr. Harold “Porky” Russell Rhoades, age 93, of Walterboro, South Carolina, entered into eternal rest Sunday morning, December 18 at his residence. He was born in Snicarte on June 22, 1929 to the late John E. Rhoades and the late Nelda F. Rhoades. He attended Black Jack School at Snicarte and graduated from Bath Lynchburg High School in 1947. He was very active in all the school sports. He dearly loved hunting with his father when he was young and hunting became his life’s work. He was manager of Grand Island Hunting Club for six years and then moved to South Carolina where he was manager for thirty-three years of Ashepoo Plantation which was owned by Mr. and Mrs. Gaylord Donnelley, whom he dearly loved and respected. The Donnelley family was very dear to him. He was proud of being a member of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elk, Lodge No. 1988 in Walterboro, where after forty-eight years of membership he became an Honorary Life Member. He was a member of the Ebenezer United Methodist Church since 1979, where he helped to cook and also assisted in fundraisers and gatherings. He is survived by: his wife, Dolores of seventy-three years; two granddaughters, Amy Wood and her husband Richie and Beth Pellum; three great-grandchildren, Braden Wood, Conner Pellum and Makenzie Pellum; a grandson-in-law, Shannon Pellum; two brother in-laws, Byron W. Miller and his wife Deb of Seattle, Washington and Steven Miller of Madison, Georgia; numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, dear friends and caregiver Elizabeth Watkins, whom he called baby doll. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Candice Rhoades. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials may be made to the following: either the Ebenezer United Methodist Church, care of Bonnie Ramsey, 169 Saratoga Lane, Walterboro, South Carolina 29488; or to, Walterboro Elks Lodge, No. 1988, 236 Milestone Lane, Walterboro, South Carolina 29488. Relatives and friends were invited to attend his funeral service which were conducted at 4 o’clock Friday afternoon, December 23 from The Brice W. Herndon and Sons Funeral Chapel, Walterboro. The Reverend Gary Finch officiated. The family received friends following the funeral ceremony until 6 o’clock that evening. Mr. Rhoades will be interred in the Bath Cemetery in Bath. Graveside services will be held at Bath Cemetery at 10:30 a.m., on Friday, December 30. Hurley Funeral Home in Havana is in charge of local arrangments.
