Herbert D. Smith

Herbert D. Smith (73) of Havana passed away at 5:00 p.m. on Monday April 5th at Sunset Nursing Home in Canton. Herb was born on August 29th, 1947 the only child of Herbert and Eva Delores (Abbott) Smith in Peoria,. He married Penny (Hackman) Smith on July 17th, 1993 in Ipava. Herb is survived by his wife Penny, two daughters, Vicki Cochran of Peoria, Karen Anderson (Justin) of Bartonville and four step children: Tonya Ray (Trevor) of Port Charlotte, FL, Tara Dillard (Derek), Tammy Danner (Travis) and Rodney Ash (Shannon) all of Havana. Herb is also blessed/survived by 15 grandchildren and 16 great grandchildren and his dog Buddy. Herbie worked for Caterpillar for 31 years until his retirement in 1997. Herb was a pivotal role with the Mason County Angels and the Tommy Hackman Lawnmower Benefit Run for 20+ years along with the VFW Men’s Auxiliary. Herbie’s greatest past time was teaching his grandchildren how to play pool along with playing on pool leagues his entire life. He enjoyed traveling throughout the area meeting new people and forming lasting friendships. He also had a love for fishing where he created deep bonds with family and friends. Herbie has created memories that will forever be cherished by each and every one of us who love him. He is now at peace and can rest easy till we all meet again. Hurley Funeral Home is in charge of cremation rites. A Celebration of Life will be held at the VFW 6408 in Havana, on May 15th from 3:00 – 7:00 p.m. Memorial Contributions may be left at Family Discretion.
