Delbert Hackman

Delbert Hackman, 98, of Havana, died peacefully surrounded by family at Mason District Hospital on Sunday, December 24, 2017. He was born September 4, 1919 near Havana to Rudolph and Mabel (Harsman) Hackman. Delbert married Doris Schone on October 13, 1946 at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Chapin, Illinois. They celebrated 71 years of marriage. Delbert is survived by his wife Doris and four children: Ron (Jan) Hackman of Havana, Marcia Hackman of Westminster, CO, Marilyn (John) Carpenter of Westminster, and Mark (Catherine) Hackman of Havana. Also surviving are seven grandchildren: Suzanne (Leland) Treebs of Escondido, CA, Ben (Kristen) Hackman of Glen Ellyn, Illinois, Jeffrey (Jenny) Hackman of Havana, Ryan (Linh) Carpenter of Hong Kong, Ross (Kiki) Carpenter of Wheatridge, CO, Anne Hackman of Havana, and Natalie Hackman of Havana; as well as seven great-grandchildren. He served four years in the U.S. Army during World War II and fought in France, Belgium, and Germany. He fought in the Battle of the Bulge and was awarded the Bronze Star. Delbert was a lifelong farmer in Havana. Delbert served on the board of directors of Sangamon Valley Farm Business Farm Management, Mason County FS, and Mason County Farm Bureau, where he also served as president. He was a 4H leader and served on the Havana District School Board for 18 years. He was a member of the American Legion post #138 in Havana. After retirement he enjoyed traveling with family and friends, especially visiting World War II historical sites. He was baptized and confirmed and was a lifelong member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Havana. He served as a Sunday school teacher and in various offices of the church, including chairman of the congregation. A visitation will be held on Thursday, December 28 at Hurley Funeral Home in Havana from 5 to 7 p.m. A funeral service will be held on Friday, December 29 at 11 a.m. at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Havana. Burial will follow at Laurel Hill Cemetery. Memorial contributions can be made to Mason District Hospital or St. Paul’s Lutheran Church.
